North America sales of 500 ml personal water bottles have increased nearly tenfold in the past decade. Plastic bottles are becoming an increasingly significant component of the waste stream. Although a substantial proportion of these bottles are recycled, a sizable quantity of greenhouse gas is released during the collection, transportation and delivery of the bottles to recycle depot or landfill sites. Many bottles are disposed of with the lid tightly fixed, and compression of the bottles become difficult to achieve. Disposed bottled which are not compressed take up the great deal of volume. The EcoTwist bottle has a mechanical shape that naturally collapses when the bottle is twisted and pushed together. Intuitively the user crushes the bottle and keeps it until it can be properly discarded in a recycling container. The volume reduction is approximately 66%. The normal home sized curb side recycling box holds approximately 74 of these 500 ml bottles. With this reduction 222 bottles can fit in the recycling box.
