New Product Inventions That May Stick Around After The Pandemic

Covid-19 has changed our lives in many ways. We see these changes in the way we socialize and the way we behave when confronting new challenges. Creative product design can provide solutions to help us be safe and become more comfortable with these changes that have affected our world.  Many new upcoming designs will most likely remain within us for generations to come.

Here are just a few innovative inventions:

PULSE is a 3D-printed wearable device that vibrates when a person’s hand is nearing their face. This is a simple and affordable technology that can easily be reproduced and is available as open source on Github. As health officials advised the world to wash hands, social distance, and wear a face mask, JPL developed PULSE as another way to assist efforts to keep us as healthy as possible. It’s an open source item, and they hope individuals or companies will replicate, refine or enhance PULSE and make it available for distribution.

The UV Light Coronavirus killer was designed by scientists from MIT‘s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL). They are the designers behind the light-emitting vertical bars that shine UV light onto surfaces. They then attached the fixture to a mobile robotic base produced by Ava Robotics.

This is a new MIT robot that uses UV light to kill the coronavirus.

The system has already been used to sanitize the Greater Boston Food Bank. In tests, the robot covered a 4,000 square foot area of the warehouse within 30 minutes, providing enough light to neutralize around 90% of coronavirus particles.

Researchers believe the system could be used in an array of different venues, such as factories, restaurants, supermarkets and can also be used to disinfect warehouses, schools, and offices. Image credit: MIT News Learn more.

Leaf Mask. If masks will stick around beyond COVID-19 this is definitely a mask worth pursuing. The Detroit-based Redcliffe Medical created the world’s first transparent FDA registered N99+ smart mask.

The mask, called LEAF, is a transparent face mask that enables being safe while allowing others to see your identity and read your lips or facial expressions. It is the first FDA-registered mask to have N99-standard air filtering abilities as well as a self-purifying feature, thanks to a built-in UV-C light. We have all seen a change in our community. These changes can be expressed through art and design. There is a clear shift in our behavior to make our interactions safer.  Even if things go back to the way they used to be, these and many more new inventions will mark our desire for a healthy future.  Do you have ideas that can improve our lives and move us beyond this global pandemic?
