In today’s health-conscious world, people are becoming more aware of exactly what they are eating. Organic foods have become increasingly important as people recognize the dangers of pesticides and genetically engineered produce. Thanks to design, innovation, and creative minds, hydroponic designs are allowing people to grow food right in their own homes, no matter where they live, how many seasons they have, or how small their home or apartment is. With these innovative hydroponic designs, you too can have fresh vegetables from your own kitchen every day.
Compact Hydroponic Designs
There are lots of DIY hydroponic designs out there. Some are not overly pretty nor very sophisticated, but they do the trick. Here is one DIY option we wanted to share. It’s about as simple as it can get: the Zig Zag Hydroponic Design that uses PVC piping and a basic plastic container.
We also found a small hydroponic design called the O-Garden. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, it also uses a very interesting design. Plants are grown in a slowly revolving wheel. Roots grow in a nutrient-rich coconut matting. The lamp placed in the centre of the wheel brings the vegetables all the light they need. It turns on and off automatically in order to respect the plants’ cycles. It is also very compact, making it ideal for small spaces.
Advantages of Hydroponic Systems
One of the biggest benefits of hydroponic systems is the organic gardening aspect . Your environment is sterile which means no pesticides. You use less water than soil-based gardening and you need less space for growing. The most attractive benefit is, of course, saving money. Imagine having fresh vegetables right at your fingertips every day of the year, without paying supermarket prices!
